WEDNESDAY BLOGGING CHALLENGE | NEW THINGS I’VE TRIED RECENTLY

I am not really in an adventurous phase of my life – all the fun and interesting trips and social activities were about a decade ago. So I guess the only new thing I’ve tried recently is actually listening to my body and resting when my back is out. I’ve got various back issues, and normally I take painkillers and try to power through it. But this time I’ve got nerve pain and I’m terrified it’s another surgical issue, so in case it’s not and just a muscle thing that’s in the same area, I’m doing nothing that isn’t absolutely necessary. I’m not bending or lifting. I’m not cooking full meals or cleaning the house. I’m only doing laundry and emptying the dishwasher if someone can help me with the bending part, and I even got one of those grabber poles for when I drop things on the floor (which happens a lot – I never realized how clumsy I was before I couldn’t bend to pick things up anymore). It’s interesting, and weird, but it’s giving me time to write this (on a laptop, while lying in my bed with strategically placed pillows), so I guess it’s not all bad?

What about you guys? I’m sure you all have much more exciting adventures on the go than I do. Anyone do anything exciting? Skydiving? Escape rooms (is that still a thing)? A new hobby? A trip? Let me live vicariously through all your exploits. Please? Throw a (debilitated) girl a bone!

I’m afraid I’m really rather boring, especially at the moment. I did recently start going back into the office after working from home for several weeks, with the result that I’m not bringing in some new decorations: a sign saying that lab coats and safety glasses are required (they aren’t), a “beware of goat” sign, a poster that tells you to “know your paradoxes” in case of a rogue artificial intelligence…

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that. Back pain is such a bitch because it stops you doing everything. An injury to an extremity, and you can work around it (however awkwardly). But your back? It’s literally the centre of everything else. I hope you have figured out what it is. If it’s a muscle spasm alternating cold and heat and resting it intensely for a week or so (it’s usually worst on day 3) might help. If you get any referred pain – pain spreading into your hip or down one of your legs – make sure to get it checked out right away. I really hope you’re back on your feet soon!

Hi! I am so with you on the back pain! I suffer horribly! I am always laying around somewhere with my laptop! That is how I can spend hours writing my posts because if it is a day it hurts, I can stay on the laptop all day. I have help doing cooking and cleaning, but I am always busy and don’t take as much time for other things. I am sending well wishes for your pain! Feel better soon!

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that. Yeah, I’ve definitely been spending a lot of time with my laptop balanced awkwardly against my bent knees while lying in bed to rest over the past week. I’m glad to hear you have help – the worst is being on your own and not being able to do the basics. It sounds like yours is chronic, but I do hope you have more good days than bad! And I’m glad you have found a positive outlet to keep you busy and connected while unable to be up and about!

I’m not very adventurous either – I like to be comfortable, and I think an adventurous personality makes for many uncomfortable scenarios. I’m also trying to relax and take time out, too. It’s harder than it seems.
