WEDNESDAY BLOGGING CHALLENGE | PETS I WISH I COULD HAVE

I love animals. So if I had a huge amount of space and zero allergies, I’d basically just have an animal sanctuary. One thing is that I don’t like the idea of taking a perfectly healthy and capable wild animal out of their natural habitat just so I can have them as my pet. So I’d want to have a facility where animals who were injured, orphaned or otherwise in need of care came for help – and when possible I’d want to rehab them and get them back where they belong. That said, there are some animals that I would love to hang out with.

I have always been fascinated by raccoons and, while I find them incredibly frustrating when they’re raiding my trash, I also find their intelligence and brazen dgaf attitude oddly admirable. My kid is currently obsessed with axolotls, I think in large part due to playing Minecraft. But they are super cute and really interesting creatures, so I would love the chance to at least see one in person, if not have one myself!

That’s it for me this week! Which pets would you want if you could have any? Are either of my picks on your wishlist?

Racoons are awesome! We had a female who would come to our back porch when we were kids and eat from our hands. Eventually she brought her family of several babies. And they had a kitten with them! We have no idea where they picked up a kitten from but it would wash its food just like a racoon before eating. Nature. Ya gotta love it!

Oh, that would be such a wonderful and fulfilling thing! When I was a kid I used to see animal handlers in any setting – zoo, petting zoo, farm, aquarium – and think the luck of being able to actually interact with some of those animals was something I couldn’t even imagine. I’ve never even dared to dream! But yeah, a large area where they could recover from injuries or illness or orphans could be cared for… that would be a wonderful thing!

I used to adore raccoons until I discovered how bloodthirsty they are ( for example, I had a friend with chickens who had a chicken killed by being pulled out piece by piece through a small hole in the coop a raccoon discovered its hand would fit into… all that was left was blood and feathers around said hole). I also got charged by one once and I never knew how HUGE they were when full grown, lol.

Now an axolotl? I could get behind one of those. They’re SO cute. <3

Yikes! I mean, I guess that’s nature, but yeah, definitely a little scary! I know logically they are not domestic animals, and I’d never actually try to have one as a pet (I don’t even feed the wild ones or interact with them in any way – I don’t want them coming to my house any more than they already do), but it’s one of those fun to imagine for 5 minutes things! But yeah, axolotls are probably a better option for those who can care for them properly!

Oh, I love the idea of having an Axolotl! Sadly, I don’t think I’m responsible enough to care for one. I’ve heard of people keeping raccoons as pets, but apparently they get into *everything* — a bit too clever for their own good. Probably better off in the wild, even if “the wild” sometimes includes my trash cans.

Yeah, I don’t know much about caring for an axolotl, but I do know they’re from a very different habitat from where I live, so I assume it would involve lots of equipment and monitoring to make sure they were healthy. I managed to kill three house plants through the winter, so my odds do not look good. Yes, I feel like the reality of a raccoon in your home would not live up to the cute pics on Instagram. Also my cats would not be fans – they barely tolerate each other and the kid, so a raccoon would be well beyond a reasonable expectation for them!
