WEDNESDAY BLOGGING CHALLENGE | WHAT MAKES ME PICK UP A BOOK

I kind of covered this a little bit last week – there are certain topics that will always attract me  to a book. But there are other reasons I’ll pick one up and at least check it out:

  1. If it’s been recommended to me or I’ve seen a lot of bookish people talking about it
  2. If it’s by an author I love
  3. If it’s in a series I’ve been reading (though I rarely read series, occasionally this applies)
  4. If it seems similar to a book I loved
  5. If it’s about books or a bookstore or reading or readers
  6. If it’s set in London or Italy
  7. If I like the cover

Yep, I’m definitely one to be attracted to a book by the cover. I’m not even ashamed to admit it. If I love the cover, it’s halfway sold. All I need is a mild level of interest in the plot.

That’s it for this week! What about you guys? What makes you pick up a book? Are there any features you just can’t resist (cover, author, subject, setting)

I’m with you – a cover is really important, and especially when you’re just browsing in a bookstore or a library, *something* has to catch your attention enough for you to pick the book up and read the blurb

Yes!!! This is the thing. Like it’s all well and good to say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover… but also isn’t that kind of the point of a well-conceived cover? To attract the people who would like the book? I’ll definitely read books with covers I don’t like if I already know about them, but I’ll never pick one up in the library or bookstore if I don’t! I’m so glad you understand! I felt like that was maybe just me there.

I’m very much a, “Someone said something about the book and made it sound really cool” person myself. Probably 95% of the books I purchase/read are because someone recommended them. Even self-promotion will get me to go look at a book, if it sounds like my kind of thing.

YES me too! Like there’ll be buzz about books, and they’ll get nominated for prizes and stuff, but then I’ll buy it when one of my favourite Booktubers raves about it. I went through a phase of getting a bunch of books that were raved about by people on BookTube… honestly it got a bit out of hand. I’ve scaled back now, so now I only get the books that either completely hit my interests, or when I’ve seen a lot of people talking about them and their feedback hits on some of the things I enjoy the most and is effusive!
